FAQ

  • Talking to someone outside of your family, friends, or colleagues can be very beneficial. A therapist offers a safe space and a supportive relationship for self-exploration. Counselling provides neutral, non-judgmental support and uses evidence-based strategies and tools to help with your concerns, leading to positive change. It can also bring clarity and a sense of being heard, supported, and understood.

  • Attending your first session can be overwhelming, and it's very normal to feel nervous or even anxious. We will ensure a smooth and comfortable process, working at a pace that's right for you.

In your first appointment, your therapist will focus on getting to know you, your history, and what has prompted you to seek support. Your therapist will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • Take a Moment to Relax Before and After Your Session

Before your appointment, allow yourself 5–10 minutes to unwind before your session. This brief period of relaxation can help you become more focused and present, enabling you to settle in quicker and gain the most from your session.

After your session, take a few minutes to settle and reflect. This gives your body the time to integrate the thoughts and feelings you explored with your therapist.

    Make Notes

After your session, you may wish to take a moment to jot down any key takeaways, assigned homework, and any strong emotions or questions. This practice can help you reflect on your progress and stay motivated on your journey.

    Practise Your Skills

To boost the effectiveness of your sessions, practise the skills you're learning between appointments. For real change to occur, reflection and action need to happen outside of therapy too.

  • Telehealth counselling (phone call or video call) offers the same professional support as traditional face-to-face therapy.

    Prepare by:

    Technical Check

Test your equipment is functioning properly (camera, microphone and speakers) with adequate battery charge and reliable internet.

    Private Spaces with Minimal Distractions
Choose a quiet and private location where you can speak openly and confidentially and inform other that you’re unavailable during this time. Dedicate your time solely to your therapeutic work by turning off notifications on your devices and avoid multi-tasking and driving during session.

    Contact Information

We will ask for your location address and your phone number in case of technical issues or emergencies. This information is kept confidential.

Relax and Reflect Before and After Session

Before your session, give yourself a few minutes to relax as this will help you settle into the session more easily. After your session, take a moment to pause and reflect. This time helps you process your thoughts and emotions, integrating what you’ve learned.

  • Queensland Psychology is not an emergency service and does not to provide after-hours support.  If you are in danger, experiencing a crisis, or need immediate support, please call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
